Creatives Concerted Effort Towards Combating Technology Facilitated Gender Based Violence-Tfgbv In South Sudan

What’s the essence of acquiring celebrity status, which allows one to wield a huge public influence without contributing to a public cause?
GEPA South Sudan, through funding from AWDF, targeted and capacity-built individuals from the creative arts industry, including musicians, social media influencers, poets, comedians, MCs, radio personalities, and cartoonists on the diverse ways by which the creative sector has perpetuated TFGBV in their different postings/social media updates.
The sessions were facilitated under the stewardship of renowned caricature artists Mr.Atem Deng Peter, aka Deng Art, and Mr. Achuil Adija, who used their invaluable artistic illustrations to depict how technology perpetuates violence and implored their contemporaries to ride on their digital platforms—social media handles (Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Whatsapp, etc.) with huge followings—to amplify awareness on the vice.

To foster a peaceful society free from violence, GEPA South Sudan collaborated with The Daniel Mwaka Show to host a podcast with panelists enriched with experiential knowledge on technology-facilitated Gender-Based Violence. The podcast series dubbed “ The Strive to Create and Sustain an Enabling Environment for Women and Girls in South Sudan ” focused on the enlightenment of viewers on the immense role technology plays in anchoring Gender-Based Violence in contemporary society, especially within cosmopolitan areas where smartphone penetration is high and subsequently exploring the roles stakeholders play in advocating for a safe space for women and girls within South Sudan.
During the podcast series, panelists included legal personnel, cyber-crime and computer experts from the National Communications Agency (NCA) South Sudan, social media influencers (survivors of cyber harassment), and representatives from GEPA South Sudan.
The topical issues gravitated around exploring survivor-centered perspectives and expert opinions on how to create an enabling environment for women and girls free from TFGBV with a focus on other existing legal frameworks & Computer Misuse provisional order 2021/proposed bill 2024, Social Media case reporting mechanism for FB, X, Instagram, TikTok & WhatsApp, referral pathways, and different forms of online violence and harassment faced by women and girls.
